French author and playwright, illegitimate son of Alexandre Dumas, père. He was born in Paris, his mother, Marie-Catherine Labay, was a dressmaker and in 1831 he was legally recognised by his father who not only ensured that he received the best education possible, but also took him away from his mother, which the law at the time permitted.
In 1844 he moved from Paris to live with his father in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, where he met Marie Duplessis who died of tuberculosis and was the inspiration for his novel La dame aux camélias. This novel was adapted into the play Camille and was the basis for Verdi’s 1853 opera, La Traviata.
In 1874 he was admitted to the Académie française and in 1894 he was awarded the Légion d'Honneur.
