American actor and author of crime fiction. Bunker had a difficult upbringing which resulted in him turning to crime. He was convicted of bank robbery, drug dealing and forgery, and was imprisoned several times. In 1951, when he was seventeen, he became the youngest ever inmate at San Quentin prison. He became interested in writing whilst in prison and found that he identified with writers such as Cervantes and Dostoyevsky, who both wrote whilst imprisoned.
In 1975, after spending eighteen years in various institutions, he gave up crime to concentrate on writing and acting. As an actor he had parts in several films but the role that he is best known for is ‘Mr Blue’ in Reservoir Dogs. Several of his novels were adapted for film, for example Animal Factory. His writing draws heavily on his experiences and a reoccurring theme in his work is young men being drawn into a life of crime at an early age. Bunker maintained that none of his work was based on actual events or people.
