English novelist who wrote sea novels as well as the children's novel The Children of the New Forest
Born in London, he joined the Royal Navy in 1806 and served until 1830; reaching the rank of Captain. His biggest literary success came in 1836 with the publication of Mr Midshipman Easy, and by 1939 he was moving in the same literary circles as Charles Dickens. His work was much admired by Joseph Conrad and Ernest Hemingway and paved the way for later works by C. S. Forester and Patrick O'Brian.
