Bulgarian-born novelist, essayist, sociologist and playwright who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1981 for writings marked by a broad outlook, a wealth of ideas and artistic power.
He spent his childhood in Bulgaria until his family moved to England. His father died in 1912 and the family moved to Vienna. Canetti obtained a chemistry degree from the University of Vienna in 1929, but he never worked as a chemist as his passion lay with philosophy and literature. In 1938 he moved to London where he stayed until the 1970s, receiving British citizenship in 1952. From the 1970s until his death he mainly lived in Zurich.
