English nature writer and essayist whose fiction deals with farming and rural life.
He was the son of a farmer, but he was unsuited to this way of life so he became a newspaper reporter.
He wrote fiction for both adults and children and his work was an inspiration for Henry Williamson, who wrote Tarka the Otter.
