British novelist and short story writer for children and adults. Born in Wales to Norwegian parents, and educated in English boarding-schools. In search of adventure after leaving school he took a job with Shell Oil in Africa. When World War II broke out he joined the RAF as a fighter pilot, receiving terrible injuries and almost dying in a plane crash in 1942. After this his writing career began, with articles for magazines such as The New Yorker. He wrote short stories for adults before concentrating on children's stories. The first of these, James and the Giant Peach, was followed by an unbroken string of hugely successful, best-selling titles.
In 1953 Dahl married actress Patricia Neal. They had five children together and he attributes his success as a writer of children's books to them. In 1983, Roald Dahl and Patricia Neal divorced after thirty years of marriage and Dahl quickly married Felicity Ann Crossland. Many of his stories have been adapted to film, most famously Charlie and The Chocolate Factory.
