English novelist and playwright. He studied at Cambridge and was forced to start writing seriously to support himself when his mother withdrew his allowance in opposition to his marriage to Rosina Doyle Wheeler in 1827; the couple eventually divorced in 1836.
His work covered a variety of genres, including historical fiction, science fiction and mystery. Although he was very popular in his day, today The Last Days of Pompeii is the only one of his works that is widely read.
He is credited with the creation of the phrases "the pen is mightier than the sword" and "the great unwashed", and the famous opening line "It was a dark and stormy night". As well as his career as a writer Bulwer-Lytton was elected as a member of parliament in 1831.
