English poet. His first verses were published in a volume of hymns in 1779. The collection, Olney Hymns, contains some of Cowper’s best known work, including Light Shining out of Darkness which gave the English language the idiom "God moves in a mysterious way, His wonders to perform." In 1791 Cowper’s translations of Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey were published.
