English poet and playwright, who is considered to be not only the greatest writer in the English language, but one of the greatest writers in the history of Western literature. He produced nearly forty plays and over one hundred and fifty sonnets. He wrote tragedies, histories, comedies and romances, which have been translated into every major language and he is the most quoted writer in the English speaking world. There has been much speculation over the years about many aspects of Shakespeare’s work and life. His sexuality and religion have come under scrutiny and there has been suggestion that Shakespeare did not actually write any of the plays that are attributed to him.
